2015 Year Review

Every year I say "what a terrible year, hope the next year is better than this one!", and I know I'm not the only one to say so.

So instead, this year, I'm going to focus on everything amazing that has happened over the last 12 months and look forward to adding to the memories.

I don't really remember much of January, February or March. I was heavily pregnant for most of it! April will stay with me for the rest of my life April was the month that my son was born. After 9 long months and 3 days in labour he was born 5 days late and he was, and still is, beautiful. He is the happiest little boy on the planet and I feel very blessed to have him in my life.

Since April I have mainly focused on being a mum - it's quite a change! But I did also start my blog. I needed something to focus on that wasn't talking baby talk! It also meant I could start focusing on myself again. After having my little boy, I put on any weight I had lost and felt awful for it. So I started the blog to help me get back to actually wanting to take care of myself and my appearance, trying new products along my journey. And also to try and give me something to kick me into gear to lose a bit of weight too.

I haven't done particularly well but my New Years resolutions include losing weight and improving on self maintenance & health.

I hope you all had an amazing 2015, it really is worth taking some time to look back over the good things that happened, even if there's only one or two. What are your New Years resolutions?

Update post

So I thought I'd post a bit of an update. Before Christmas I was plagued with a nail infection and my finger was pretty swollen. It hurt to touch anything including type. It's finally starting to clear now but it really was a kick up the derrière to stop biting my nails!

This Christmas was also my little boys first Christmas! He was spooky rotten and it really wore him out but it was extremely enjoyable. Did you all enjoy Christmas? Did you get everything you wanted?

We've had a pretty relaxing couple of days and will continue to in preparation for New Years. Although I'm unsure as to what I will be doing yet, I'm sure it will be very fun and exciting! What are you most looking forward to in the New Year?

Nikki ~x~

Christmas!

1 Week from now we will all be tucked up in bed awaiting the arrival of Mr Claus and his beautiful Reindeer!

I love Christmas so so so much! When 1st December hits, the Christmas playlist is on, the Santa hat is out and I get super excited about starting my Advent Calendar. We were a bit late putting the tree up this year but it's up now and it looks beautiful. I bought a new decoration too in the form of a canvas painting of The Snowman and The Snowdog - it lights up! I still need to get a hammer and nails so it can be hung up but I will make sure that is done before next week.

Is everyone ready for Christmas? I can't wait!!

Bad Blogger!

So I've been a bit of a bad blogger the last couple of weeks. I have been a bit poorly though and have truly been feeling sorry for myself! But I'm almost bad to my normal self and am back to feeling up to doing things - blogging included!

Not much has happened but I have had a bit of time to catch up on reading some blogs and watching YouTubers. One of my favourite YouTubers at the moment is Cutepolish - she does nail art tutorials and some of them are amazing. She did a video on some of Essie's nail polishes as they are doing a Retro Revival Collection and bringing back some popular shades from days gone by! Some are from more recent years like 2006 but the one I'm most looking forward to is a shade called Starry Starry Night and it's from 1985! It's a gorgeous glittery blue that will be perfect for Christmas. Can't wait to get my hands on a bottle!

Is Everyone Poorly?

I woke this morning to find I've lost my voice! My throat is incredibly sore and I feel like I have zero energy. People I've spoken to over the last week have either been ill or know someone who has been ill. It feels like everyone is coming down with  a bug at the moment!

The upside to being poorly? Curling up on the sofa with a hot water bottle and Disney movies!

How are you all feeling? How do you like to deal with feeling rotten?

New day, new start

So tomorrow is a new day, (almost) a new month and for me a new start. On almost every aspect of my life I feel like I need a clean slate and to start again. So let's start little. From tomorrow I shall make sure I get up and get dressed, actually take the time on my make up and actually allow me to feel good about myself, I really will stop biting my nails and use the cuticle oil and nail envy, I will also make sure that every morning I find time for a cup of tea and some breakfast. I have a terrible habit of skipping breakfast and if I'm trying to lose a little weight and trim down I need to start eating properly - starting with breakfast. I'm actually going to have breakfast!

I'm also going to attempt to drink more water instead of fizzy drinks.  Even if I have to put a splash of squash in it, I'm going to at least try!

Also I'm going to try and post on a regular basis. Once a day, or at worst once every other day. I do realise that sometimes it may not be possible to blog every day but I can try my best.

For now my lovelies - night night sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite! Nikki ~x~

I'm trying... Honest!

You probably won't believe me but I'm really trying to stop biting my nails! And to be honest it's not the nail biting I'm having issues with - it's the picking at the skin around my nails. I see a loose bit of skin and I just can't help myself!

Does anyone have any product recommendations to help me stop picking the skin? It really hurts but I can't seem to stop myself!

Right, Let's Start Again!

The last few weeks have been pretty stressful, so no sooner had I started the 'Grow My Nails' project, I failed. Miserably. I've bitten my nails right back and I've pulled at the skin. I've not used my Nail Envy or my Avoplex Cuticle Oil. And I haven't touched my lovely Avojuice hand lotion.

So I am making a vow right now to actually do this so I have nice nails in time for Christmas so I can do some Christmas nail art!

I'm also going to try to lose a bit of weight too. I lost loads of weight during my pregnancy as I was so poorly in the beginning but I seem to have put it all back on again *sigh* so I now need to work super hard to get it back off and this time keep it off! This is going to be particularly difficult for me as I'm such a fussy eater. I don't eat much if any veg, I do like fruit but even that I'm quite fussy on. I'll be having a read up on healthy eating and foods that are good for you that I actually like!

Migration!

Ok so that might sound more exciting than it actually is! I have migrated from Tumblr to Blogger! I loved Tumblr but there is a lot more you can do with Blogger. I can now change my fonts in my posts easily, there are many more themes and backgrounds to choose from, and there seems to be a bit more traffic flowing through Blogger so that should be good!

I'm having a few issues updating the info on Bloglovin' though - so if anyone knows how to delete a blog and find the new one, let me know!

Goals for my Blog

So I thought I would set myself some goals regarding my blog which I thought I would share with you and get some thoughts if anyone has any!

First off, I want to start adding a photo to every post. But for this I need decent quality, light photos. So I need to learn how to take decent, light photos! So that’s goal number 1 - Learn how to take good quality photos and upload at least one with every blog post.

Secondly, blog more! I find myself hitting a bit of a bump every now and again (ok, ok. A lot!) and I won’t blog for a good week or more. Me and my sister started this blog so we could share our thoughts and tips on makeup, nail products etc and our thoughts on day to day life. Time to up our game!

Thirdly and finally, use Twitter and Instagram a bit more with the blog. I’m always tweeting or posting on instagram so maybe I should start doing both in the name of the blog a little bit more!

Turn it around

So I’ve had a pretty rough weekend. It started really bad, to shorten everything down (for now at least) I spent Saturday morning in tears. I never expected to start my weekend this way. I eventually managed to crawl out of my pit and found a way to drag me and my family to my mum and dads for the afternoon and evening.

Mum took me and my son out for an afternoon walk to try and take my mind off things and it really worked! It was freezing cold (doesn’t the weather seem to have gone freezing so suddenly?!) but I like that. I like putting on my hat, scarf and gloves and wrapping up. I really feel like Christmas is just around the corner when I first have to wrap up for winter! Mum was then nice enough to cook us all pie and chips for dinner - the perfect end to the day.

Yesterday was a chill out day. Spent on the sofa gaming & watching TV with some chocolate for comfort. I love a lazy day every once in a while!

How do you like to spend your weekends?

Something Slightly Different

Being a new blogger you could probably guess that one of many reasons for starting blogging is down to other bloggers that I follow and read. These are a variety of blogs, some about make up and beauty products, some about gaming, some about mental health and some about life in general.

One of the bloggers I follow and find particularly interesting is Famous In Japan. Her latest post talks about negativity in the blogging community at the moment. It’s an interesting read and I have to agree. There’s a lot of negativity in blogs at the moment. And it gets me wondering if this is because people are blogging to share a passion or to just get things off their chests anymore but to get freebies and compete in a game of who-has-the-most-followers-or-readers.

I started this blog as a means of being able to say what I think without consequence. Most of the time anyway! I like looking at products I’ve particularly enjoyed and sharing my thoughts. I like having a place where I feel I can say what’s on my mind without worrying too much about what people will think.

What are your thoughts on blogging at the moment? And why did you all get into blogging?

Update Post

Just a bit of an update from me on… well, everything!

First up, I have been doing really well on the non-nail biting front. My nails are actually starting to grow. Nail envy is literally the best polish I have ever used. The Avoplex cuticle oil has also been amazing. I have to confess I have pulled at bits of skin that were loose but the amount of dry skin has drastically reduced. I’ll post a proper update on the nail front with progress picture very soon.

I haven’t been very well for the last week. Tickly cough, sore throat, headache, achy joints. I’ve been taking Lemsips and drinking plenty of honey and lemon but it’s been really stubborn!

Hopefully I’ll feel better soon and can start blogging like I had originally intended!

Fail? Or just a set back?

I’ve had a minor setback with the whole not-biting-my-nails thing. For the past few days I’ve been rather ill. I’ve had a constant sore throat, keep losing my voice, I’ve got a blocked nose, a cough and a headache that makes brain freeze seem like a warm summers day.

I’ll obviously live and I will recover. But it does mean I’m struggling on the eating healthy, exercising, I’ve bitten my nails and the skin around them and I’ve rarely worn make-up.

I’m dosing myself up with paracetamol and honey & lemon drinks and hopefully I’ll be all good in a couple of days. We were hoping to take a trip to the zoo this weekend but with me not feeling good and with the weather not looking good, we’ll probably pass. There’s always next weekend!

I last bit my nails about 5 days or so ago. But have picked at the skin very recently. As in yesterday recently. Some bits of skin around my fingers are so sore at the moment. But this morning I put on 2 coats of nail envy and used the Avoplex cuticle oil. My nails instantly felt nicer and the oil really helped moisten the dry flaky skin.

Throughout the day I have been using the Avojuice hand lotion. I’ve opted for the coconut smell today and my hands already feel super soft! I’m extremely impressed.

Delivery Time!

So this morning I took delivery of my order of OPI Nail Envy, OPI Avoplex nail & cuticle oil and OPI Avojuice hand lotion.

The first thing in the box was the Avojuice hand lotion. I bought a selection of minis so I can try different scents to find a favourite. In the box there is Jasmine, Sweet Lemon Sage, Vanilla Lavender, Spiced Persimmon, Coconut Melon and Cran & Berry. I haven’t smelled then yet but I think Cran & Berry will be my favourite - although I am open to being proved wrong!

The next thing was the Avoplex cuticle oil. I’m look forward to using this product very much. My cuticles are terrible and hopefully this will nourish them enough and they’ll be easier to manage.

Last but not least is the Nail Envy. I have used this before and loved it. Hopefully it can work wonders for me once more. If it does there are tinted and coloured nail envy varnishes on the market and I’ll be very tempted to give those a go.

I’ll start using these tomorrow morning and I’ll post a before picture of my nails so you can get an idea of how bad they actually are!!!

Nail Time!

So I’ve decided on some products to help me grow my nails. I’ve got on order OPI Nail Envy and cuticle oil. Now i Just need to decide on a hand cream. I’m thinking of going with OPI Avojuice. Once I receive my products I’ll take pictures of my nails so I will have a before picture.

As I go along I might change which products I’m using or decide to try something different if I get any suggestions.

Wish me luck!

Aurora Band - The Next Day

So I used the aurora band last night for the first time. I’m pretty sure my hair is too short - that or I didn’t use it right. The front of my hair was incredible. The curls were perfection. As for the hair on the back of my head? It was not curly but a frizzy mess. I’m going to give it another go soon and try it slightly differently and if that fails I’ll try when my hair is a bit longer!

Nikki ~x~

I bought this Aurora Band a while ago and haven’t yet used it. I’m giving it a go this evening and will review in the morning. I hope I’ve used it right! My hair might be too wet for it but if it is then I’ll try again tomorrow night with my hair a little dryer!

I will be the happiest girl on the planet if this thing actually works!

Speak tomorrow!

It’s Grow Time

So my nails are disgusting. They’re bitten really short and the skin around the edges have been picked and pulled at until they bleed. It’s time to stop biting, picking and pulling and time to grow my nails so they’re long and I can continue my nail art on my actual nails!

I’m going to be hunting down some products that will aid nail growth and really nourish my cuticles. Once I have tracked down some decent products I’ll post regular updates and pictures of how my nails are doing. Nail biting is addictive. It’s difficult to stop. It’s a bad habit and habits are tough to break. Like my habit of snacking on crisps and chocolate for example. With this too, I will be trying to break the habit. Move on to healthier snacks. Healthier foods and in general a much healthier lifestyle.

I’m going to be starting MummyFit classes at my local gym very soon. And fingers crossed things will start to take shape and I’ll be a healthier person in mind, body and spirit.

If anyone has any suggestions about any nail products, diets, ways to cut back on snacking etc. please please please let me know!

Speak soon my lovelies!

Thank heavens for 'It's Potent'

So the last week has been so exhausting! I’m not even sure why! So all I can say is I have never been so grateful for an eye cream as I am for Benefit Cosmetics ‘It’s Potent Eye Cream’. It has kept my bags at bay meaning that although I feel like they’re falling off my face they’re so heavy they certainly don’t look it! In fact I don’t even look tired! Until I fall asleep in my dinner that is!

Nikki ~x~

PosieBalm

I’ve now been using Benefit Cosmetics PosieBalm for over a week and I can honestly say it’s amazing! My lips feel incredibly soft. I’m a bit of a lip balm addict. I own several lipbalms and have many favourites (along with many I really dislike!).

Benefit’s lipbalms are not greasy, not sticky and have a lovely tint to them making them a great subtle alternative to lipstick. A huge thumbs up from me!

I’m still using the other products I acquired from the Benefit Bloggers Event (most of which I am really impressed with, others I haven’t even used yet) so posts about those will come soon!

Bene-Blog

So, we received an invite to go along to a bloggers event at the Benefit Cosmetics counter in Debenhams, Telford. As our first event we had no idea what to expect! When we arrived we were greeted by Abi - and a counter full of party hats, drinks, doughnuts from Krispy Kremes and bags of sweeties from Mollies. Everyone knows Krispy Kreme - if you don’t, where have you been?! Mollies is a local company, originally set up in Welshpool and now have stores in Shrewsbury and Telford as well! It truly is one of my favourite confectionery stores.

Abi started the morning by taking us through all the different Christmas gifts that Benefit have released this year! These were ‘your b.right to party’, ‘your so party!’, ‘get your party on!’, ‘life of the party’, ‘party like a rockstar’ ‘REAL cheeky party’ and lastly ‘pucker up and party’.

Then, after introducing Gemma from SkinSincere, Abi then went on to show us 2 different looks using various different products.. The first was a subtle day time look and the second an evening look. Once she had show us each on we set about to recreate the look on each other! I paired with Karen from JinksyBeauty while Nadine was with Hannah from Pull Yourself Together. Karen started us off by recreating the daytime look. I loved this look as it was very subtle and could be easily adapted depending on how bold you like your make up to be. I then recreated the evening party look on Karen. I was really pleased with how this turned out! There was lots of sparkle in this look - and who doesn’t like a bit of sparkle!

With each look we used Air Patrol eye primer and POREfessional face primer. I wasn’t overly keen on the Air Patrol primer but I am totally head over heels for the POREfessional primer. POREfessional is a silicone based primer and really does smooth complexion under your normal foundation.

Once we had completed our looks, we were all entered into a raffle with the chance to buy extra tickets with the money going to the Benefit Cosmtics #BoldIsBeautiful Project. The project is partnered with the amazing womens charities Look Good Feel Better and Refuge. I was so lucky and won myself a mini goody bag containing ‘that gal’ face primer, ‘they’re real’ mascara and ‘high beam’ luminescent complexion enhancer.

image

Each blogger also received a goody bag each containing various goodies and samples! The following pictures show what I got in my goody bag:

popband London hair bands - these are amazing, they leave your hair kink free!

image

Benefit It’s Potent eye cream and Total Moisture face cream samples

image

SkinSincere Coconut Sugar scrub sample

image

Givenchy perfume samples

Benefit POREfessional mini.

There was also a goody bag from Wild Olive. This contained some bath tea bags and a bath sundae!

image

I’m really looking forward to trying out some of these products and letting you guys know what I think!

I of course had to make a cheeky purchase while there! I opted for Posiebalm, Benefits lip balm - another product I will blog on after I’ve used for a while.

image

I had a fabulous day and for our first bloggers event it was a complete success!

Special thanks to Abi for hosting and arranging our incredible goody bags and gifts, to Gemma from SkinSincere for making us aware of your amazing natural products and for our sample in our goody bags and finally to the other bloggers - Karen from JinksyBeauty, Hannah from Pull Yourself Together, Kirsty from Just A Little Bit Ginger and Beth from BB-Beauty.

I will be blogging updates on what I think of each product as I go along! And dare I mention the ‘C’ word yet? Probably best to wait til after Halloween!

Laters!

Our first event!

Next weekend we are off to a Benefit beauty bloggers event and we can’t wait! Really looking forward to trying all the new products that are being released and sharing with you guys exactly what we think! :-)

Also over the next week or so I’ll be looking into different products which will improve the state of the skin around my nails and products to help me grow my nails (that’s right! I’m a nail biter!). I really don’t want to bite my nails and seeing others with really nice nails makes me really jealous - so I’ll be looking at products and which ones are the best for those of us that sit in the group ‘no willpower’! I’ve been biting my nails for about 20 years so it’s going to be very difficult to stop biting my nails - if anyone has any tips or product recommendations I’d be very happy to hear them!!

Nikki ~x~

A quick ‘Hello’!

There comes a time in every bloggers life to write THAT first blog post. It’s a scary and daunting experience for all involved but it’s always best to just get it out of the way. Like ripping off a plaster. The quicker it’s done the more pain free it is.

Welcome to Curves and Contour. This is a blog by Nikki & Nadine focusing on beauty products. We will be looking at different products from a variety of different brands and whether they are actually any good, on two very different skin tones - one dark, one light. Our promise to you is to always be honest.

We are also using this blog to help us with our weight loss & healthy living, fashion etc.

We don’t want our first post to be too long so we will leave it here for now!

We look forward to our adventure with you and see you in the next post!
